What is the Alumni Postgraduate Studentship 2009?

The Alumni Postgraduate Studentship is an on-going initiative and is funded by donations made by Lancaster University Alumni. Funding is available for up to five £1000 studentships.

Applications are invited from any student who has completed a first degree at Lancaster and wishes to go on to postgraduate study at Lancaster University.

Applicants must have applied for a postgraduate course in order to apply for a studentship.

 

Guidelines for Applicants 

 
Who decides how the money is spent?
 
The Alumni Postgraduate Studentship Committee (whose membership includes alumni and University staff representatives) makes decisions about who receives the awards.
 
The Committee meets in August each year. The next meeting of the Committee is in August 2009.
 
 
How do I apply for funds for my project?
 
By completing an application form and submitting it to the Alumni and Development Office by Friday 31st July 2009).
 
Your CV and two references (signed by your referees) should be submitted along with the application form.

Who can apply for an award?
 
Applications are invited from any student who has completed a first degree at Lancaster University and wishes to go on to post-graduate study at Lancaster University (for example, Masters or PhD courses). Applicants must have applied for a post-graduate course at Lancaster University in order to apply for the Studentship. Students can apply for the award to fund any year of their programme of study, but will only receive one award for each post-graduate course).
 
Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the life of the University or of the wider community, for example, membership of one or more societies, the JCR, voluntary work. It is important on your application form to give examples of how you have shown this commitment.
 
Applications must be supported by two references (signed by the referees), one of which must be an academic reference from past/future teaching staff and one must be able to comment on your contribution to University life or the wider community.
 
 
How much is the award?
 
Up to five £1000 awards will be made each year.
 
 
How will I know if my application has been successful?
 
You will be advised of the outcome of your application by email or post by no later than Friday 28th August 2009. 
 
The award will be made when a place on your post-graduate course has been confirmed.
 
 
How will the award be paid?
 
The award will be paid direct into a nominated bank account in two installments (£500 each) in October 2009 and February 2010.
 
 
What follow-up activity is required for successful applications?
 
After notification of a studentship you will need to supply the Alumni & Development Office with the relevant details for the payment arrangements.
 
All successful applications will be required to provide a report for the Alumni and Development Office on how the studentship helped with the chosen post-graduate study programme. Reports for successful applications in July 2009 will be required at the completion of the course. In addition, applicants may be contacted in order to supply short articles and photographs about the award for inclusion in Alumni and Development publications.
